First experience with the new IGEL Linux V5 (upgrade)

Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

Hello Folks,

today i’ve upgraded my first bunch of UD3 and UD5 devices with the new IGEL Linux V5.

After i put the content coming with the upgrade pack on our IIS and also an USB memory i run the upgrade thru network and also from the USB Memory. It works quite well and i got no issues during the update and here are some of my first screenshots. I’ve updated several UD3 and UD5 single/dual core devices (see supported device list), so not only a “one” device test, also it’s important that you can NOT use the buddy update feature to perform the upgrade!

IGEL Linux V5: New Linux Desktop look

IGEL Linux V5: New Linux Desktop look

After the Upgrade you will directly boot into the new GUI which looks very stylish, the screen above was taken from a device which i’ve set back to factory defaults but i also got no issues with devices without a reset back to factory defaults.

IGEL Linux V5: New RemoteFX settings for Windows8/Server 2012 RDS

IGEL Linux V5: New RemoteFX settings for Windows8/Server 2012 RDS

For my test i first setup a RemoteFX session to a Windows 8 environment, in the screen above you see some of the new RDP settings for RemoteFX. Please be aware, if you’re using the UMS Version 4.04.110 or older you have to configure these new settings thru System->Registry in a Profile optimized for the IGEL Linux V5 (5.01.xxx).

IGEL Linux V5: New Session display Options

IGEL Linux V5: New Session display Options

Be also aware that sessions have now in general more display options (where should the session be shown for the user) and that you’ve also more Sessions available in the Accessories Tab in the IGEL Setup. I strongly recommend to configure and prepare this before rolling out the new Firmware, in general you can also use/upgrade your old Profiles for Linux V4 to Linux V5 without any issues. One add-on, please note the new Remote Desktop Web Access feature in the left Setup Menu… 🙂

IGEL Linux V5: Running a RemoteFX Session as window

Last but not least a small test with my RemoteFX session, in general the new Linux V5 looks very good and you should get a look on it.

IGEL Linux V5: Running DATI (ILISE) V1.06 Custom Partition Sample Conky

IGEL Linux V5: Running DATI (ILISE) V1.06 Custom Partition Sample Conky

The last thing i want to test are the cloud-client.info custom partition samples and the custom partition packages created with our Deployment Assistant Tool for IGEL Thin Clients (DATI/ILISE), i run several samples and never got an issue. This solution is still not supported by IGEL Technology but if you already use it, you don’t have to be afraid that the packages are not working anymore, this includes upgrading a device where these packages are already used.

So from my side i will strictly go with IGEL Linux V5 in the future and after i run some more test to check all features and functions, i will also release a new UMS Template and UMS Virtual Appliance after the new final Universal Management Suite Version is released.

I also added a couple of FAQ’s to the cloud-client.info FAQ Area, it’s still more to do but it should cover already some open questions.

Have Fun

Information: Upgrade IGEL Linux V4 to IGEL Linux V5 (Update)

Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013

Hello Folks,

as you see IGEL has released the IGEL Universal Desktop OS V2 (based on IGEL Linux V5) and the IGEL Linux V5.

What is important to know regarding the Upgrade?

IGEL Universal Desktop OS -> IGEL Universal Desktop OS V2 = Not supported

The hardware requirements have significantly changed (increased) and also some older hardware platform’s are not supported anymore with the V5. If you want to upgrade you need a seperate license / installer media and you MUST test it (OS V2) in advance!

Update: IGEL will release a update Firmware to upgrade from IGEL Universal Desktop OS to the new Linux V5 based Universal Desktop OS but you still require a new license (!). This update will be only available on request regarding the fact that the upgrade can make an installation unusable if no “new” licenses are in place and to prevent a not wanted upgrade.

IGEL Universal Desktop LX -> IGEL Linux V5 = Supported for new IGEL Dual Core devices, older devices with a single core CPU are not supported for an Upgrade. Update: The last Generation of single core devices is also supported, like UD3-730 for the Upgrade.

What is important here, a direct firmware update will not work! I’ve already test this so you can not mess up you existing installation in any way and the firmware files can be located in the same folder like the IGEL Linux V4 firmwares on your webserver, currently iam waiting for the “step between” to upgrade my dual core device’s but it’s not yet released(!).

Update: Upgrade pack is available for download here http://www.myigel.biz/index.php?dir=IGEL_UNIVERSAL_DESKTOP_FIRMWARE/LX/UPGRADE_FW_V4_TO_V5/

Will i still receive updates for my IGEL Linux V4 devices = Yes, nothing changed here at the moment.

What  happens to Windows (W7)= Nothing, only a change for the Product Name after the update.
If i perform a upgrade from Linux V4 to V5, do i need to update my profiles in the UMS= If you want to configure new settings of course but you should not be forced to change existing configurations because the most settings should be similar. In any way the known basic rule: Test in advance!

Should i test the new IGEL Linux V5 before rolling out the firmware or Universal Desktop OS V2 to a bunch of devices= Yes, it’s a complete new product and it don’t have to work like the old one! …otherwise you would not deploy it, right?

What happens to my current order or if i don’t want the new IGEL Linux V5 in my IGEL Linux V4 environment= Check with the IGEL Sales Rep/Service, IGEL started shipping the new firmware and if you don’t want to deploy the IGEL Linux V5 you should check in advance what type of Linux or UDC incl. license will be shipped to you to prevent a bad supprise.

Update: Can i downgrade from IGEL Linux V5 to IGEL Linux V4: Yes and No; devices delivered with IGEL Linux V5 can not be downgraded, a device that was original delivered with Linux V4 and got a upgrade from V4 to V5 can be downgraded via a seperate Firmware package.

Please Note: Iam not responsible for the upgrade path’s or how the upgrade is handled, there might be changes in the future but this is based on the information’s i received until today from IGEL. If there are major updates i will blog it here like in the past. If you have seperate questions contact the IGEL Support Team, iam sure they will help you if possible.

Cheers

Michael

P.S.: Regarding the new trial/test licenses (OS V2) or trial/test devices contact your Partner or IGEL Sales Rep.

Some facts about the upcoming IGEL UD 10

Tuesday, September 24th, 2013

Hi Folks,

i just want to share some facts about the new IGEL UD 10 device with you.

Launch date: 1st of October 2013

Regarding the new IGEL Linux V5 i can’t tell much at the moment, the screen above is a fake (i just want that it looks nice… 🙂 ..but the device picture is real. ) but the final result will look like that. As soon there is a IGEL Linux V5 available i will write more about it but currently IGEL do not share any RC’s or preview Versions. 🙁

You should be aware that a few things will change in the upcoming months, like the Productnames (see above) but don’t panic… It’s still a IGEL Linux. Regarding Windows 7 is not much to say, still a IGEL optimized Microsoft Windows Embedded but i will send also an update regarding this once it is available.

Regarding the specs, the device looks nice on the first view and could be a very nice solution depending on the use case. If you’re looking out for a cool (large display) all in one device you should try to get a trial device after the product lunch…

Cheers

Michael

P.S.: Of course i will rework the cloud-client.info hardware whitepaper after the final release.

Tip: How to allow RDP and unmanaged ICA connections to XenDesktop 7 Terminal Servers (Windows Server 2008R2/2012)

Monday, September 23rd, 2013

Hello Folks,

not 100% IGEL related: If you already use XenDesktop 7 you maybe want to allow/use RDP connections or unmanaged ICA connections to a Terminal Server.

In XenApp 6.5 you only need to setup the Citrix “Desktop Access” Policy but for XenDesktop 7 this is not enough and still RDP or unmanaged ICA connections didn’t work.

After you installed the XenDesktop 7 VDA for a Server OS you will get a new “local” User Group “DirectAccess Users”, add your Domain Users or User Groups to this local Group on the Terminal Server.

XenDesktop 7 local DirectAccess Users group.

XenDesktop 7 local DirectAccess Users group.

After this is done, you are able to connect to the Terminal Server as User via RDP or unmanaged ICA.

Cheers

Michael

P.S.: This is useful for the IGEL Linux if you want to setup a direct ICA session for a Desktop Session… 😀

Solution: Updated Apple device driver package for the IGEL Linux x86 (LX/OS) and information related to the new IOS 7

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Hello Folks,

i’ve updated the two driver packages which can be downloaded here:

1) Apple device driver + local aTunes (iTunes alternative for Linux) + mplayer for the media playback      Download

2) Apple device driver only      Download

The updated packages are now able to detect an Apple Device without any User interaction, to enable this feature hide all three sessions in System->Firmware Customization->Custom Application. Then browse to Custom commands->Desktop commands->Custom Command Desktop Final and remove # from the line #setsid /config/sessions/applelauncher0 and reboot the device. After the reboot the device will check for an Apple Device every 5 seconds (can be modified thru the sleep commands). So you have three way how to mount a Apple device.

One small Tip: If you want to make only the DCIM folder available to transfer pictures in an ICA or RDP session you can browse in the IGEL setup in the session configuration to the ICA or RDP Global configuration and change in Mapping->Drive Mappings the path from /media/apple to /media/apple/DCIM.

If you already using one of these packages you only have to replace the UMS Profile and not the binaries.

Important Note: The new Apple IOS 7 is working with this package but it seams to be that the IPad together with IOS 7 get to less voltage from the client. If you got other results please inform me!

(Thanks to a User for this quick update, i only got an IPad with IOS 7 for my tests and not an IPhone!)

Update: It seams to  be that IOS7 produces some “hick ups”, as soon there is a fixed version available i will update this package.

Cheers

Michael

P.S.: This is the last release created in the manual way, all future releases will be created with DATI and can be edited/modified with DATI by your own, also this will be a sample how you can work with DATI for a IGEL Linux software integration.

Using Citrix GoToMeeting with Citrix XenApp or XenDesktop

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

Hi Folks,

maybe this information is useful: If you want to use Citrix GoToMeeting you should be aware that you can not use GoToMeeting  together with an Audio Headset and XenApp.

If you are using XenDesktop together with a Desktop OS (not Server OS!) then it will work and you can use the Headset.

This is not related to IGEL, it’s a general behavior for GoToMeeting together with XenDesktop/XenApp and the Client OS (Windows/Linux) is not important!

Cheers

Michael

P.S.: Future versions of GoToMeeting maybe will not show this behavior… 🙂

Solution: cloud-client.info introduces first Apple device support for Linux based Thin Clients

Friday, August 30th, 2013

Hi folks,

so often i’ve been asked to use Apple devices like the Iphone, Ipad or Ipod with an (IGEL) Linux based thin client without using (expensive) USB redirection solutions…

Here is our first custom partition sample introducing Apple device support for all Universal Desktop LX/OS (x86) based devices!

atunes

Apple devices can be used local, in Microsoft Remote Desktop sevices or Citrix sessions and more. The pack includes also a local running Application (Atunes) which works quite similar to Itunes. Itunes will not recognize the device in a terminal server session but you can use file based Itunes alternatives and access the Apple device file system to copy pictures or what ever!

This solution is tested with various Apple devices (Iphone 4, Iphone 5, Ipod 7gen and Ipad 3)but please note: No one will support it. 😉 A jailbreak is not required… 😀

To read more or download the solution klick here: Apple device support

The package is modular designed, so you can seperate not required functions like aTunes….

Have fun and a nice Weekend!

Michael

P.S.: Regarding the fact that i don’t own any Apple device i want to thank all guys that borrow me a device without being afraid that i damage any device during my test’s… 😀

Tip: Fixing Keyboard Layout Issues with VMWare Horizon View Client 2.0 for Linux and Mac OS X

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

Hello Folks,

it looks that the current VMWare Horizon View Client for Linux and Mac OS X have an issue with Keyboard mappings, for example you are using Scandinavien or Swiss Layouts on the PC / Thin Client and in the VM the Keyboard Layout changes to English(US). It also looks that it doesn’t matter what Keyboard Layout’s are available in the VM, so as sample also a pure German VM without any US Settings/Layout available(!) switch to English(US).

This behavior is also only related to the current Horizon View Client (IGEL Firmware = 4.12.100), older Clients from VMWare are working fine in my known cases (IGEL Firmware < 4.12.100) incl. the current Client for Mac OS X which shows the same "wrong" behavior like the current Linux Client (old OS X Clients are working fine too). A Workaround to fix this issue is the following registry tweak for the VM's which can be applied thru a Group Policy or set in the local RegEdit if needed. Open the Registry and browse to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout Create a new Registry Setting: Value name: IgnoreRemoteKeyboardLayout Data type: REG_DWORD Value data: 1 Apply the setting/policy to the affected VM's only, the issue should be fixed now and the language settings in the VM will be used for the session. As said and in general, the issue can happen but it don't have to be... Only use it if required, i will not provide any warranty at all and you do this on your own risk. Cheers Michael P.S.: This will also fix issues with other Windows based Remote Sessions like RDP, ICA or whatever if you run in a similar issue. Please note: After done this setting the local client keyboard layout will always be ignored.
