cloud-client.info end-of-year contest – win a free Citrix Exam voucher

Thursday, November 27th, 2014

Hello Folks,

the end of the year is coming closer and why not starting a small contest?

The Prize is an Exam Voucher for any Citrix Exam (except Premium Exams), so you can do a XenDesktop Administration or Deployment Exam but not a Design Exam. Quite simple… The registration fee for the exam (~7 US$) is not included. 🙂

How can you get? Provide us any solution/improvement for the current IGEL Universal Desktop LX/OS Firmware 5.04.x that fits to the following requirements.

1) The solution must be your own idea and it is not just copied from any other forum, we will verify this…
2) The solution doesn’t require any paid 3rd Party license (except: Terminal Server/VDI Cals from any vendor) or contains a license/EULA violation against any company/private person.
3) The solution should be helpful for a bunch of people/users, simple rule: Bigger impact=bigger change to win. It doesn’t matter how big the solution is… It could be a patch, a binary add-on, a good whitepaper or how to.. but no hardware modification that impact’s the hardware warranty!
4) The solution can be deployed/used thru the IGEL Universal Management Suite.
5) You agree that the solution will be released thru cloud-client.info for free to all other IGEL Users.
6) The solution comes with a min. documentation to get it running without consulting any other manual/documentation.
7) The solution is free from any financial interest: No ads, No licenses, No hidden fees and so on.
8) The solution do not contain any hack, backdoor, trojan or similar; the winning solution will be verified and monitored in a sandbox and maybe rebuild if possible. In case you have developed an application the source code must be provided with your email (but it will not be released to the public or used in any other way).
9) The solution incl. all documents must be in english.

Please send your solution/suggestion to blog@cloud-client.info (Headline: IGEL Contest) and provide us also your contact details. All personal information’s collected will be deleted once the contest is finished (latest January the 15th 2015) and will never be provided to any other party/ used for a newsletter or similar stuff. The voucher will be provided in digital form by mail and will be valid for a min. of 3 months. We will announce the winner latest on January the 5th 2015, please provide us with your email if your Name should be fully mentioned in the public announcement or only the initials (like MH from Zuerich). Please note: Only the winner will be informed!

In case you have send us a solution and you’re not the winner please provide us a statement if you allow us to provide your solution to the public or not including if you want to be mentioned as source in the article (could be released thru our blog and/or our FAQ Project).

If you are working for a commercial software or hardware vendor we’re sorry: This contest is not for you!

The winning solution will be provided thru cloud-client.info for free but without any warrany or support in general!

Last date to send us the solution is December the 28th 2014, so you’ve exactly one month time.

Have fun and iam really looking forward if or what solutions we will receive! 🙂

Cheers

Michael

P.S.: Of course and like ever.. No warranty for everything, but be sure: If you win you will get the voucher!

P.S.2: This contest doesn’t belong to IGEL Technology, Citrix or Pearson Vue, it’s a pure cloud-client.info contest.

Tip: Troubleshoot Citrix HDX Flash Redirection Windows .reg file

Wednesday, November 26th, 2014

Hello Folks,

i’ve been asked to provide a ready to use .reg file to setup the Windows registry settings from our HDX Flash Redirection Troubleshooting guide (Here).

The registry file can be downloaded here: Here

You can also create it thru copy and paste, the file will do the 64-Bit and x86 related settings but please note:

1) You still need to enable HDX Flash thru Citrix Policies
2) You still need to install the Flash Plugin (not ActiveX Plugin!!!) at the Server and the Client!

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Citrix\HdxMediaStreamForFlash\Server\PseudoServer]
“FlashPlayerVersionComparisonMask”=dword:00000000
“UserEnabledFlashV2″=dword:00000001
“IEBrowserMaximumMajorVersion”=dword:0000000b

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Citrix\HdxMediaStreamForFlash\Server\PseudoServer]
“FlashPlayerVersionComparisonMask”=dword:00000000
“UserEnabledFlashV2″=dword:00000001
“IEBrowserMaximumMajorVersion”=dword:0000000b

Have fun

Michael

P.S.: This will more or less force flash redirection for all Flash enabled Websites (thru Citrix Policy), for clients without a installed Flash Plugin only a colored Windows (color set thru a Citrix Policy.. again) will appear. So you need to verify that all clients in the environment have the Flash Plugin installed! Not compatible flash content will provide the same result!

P.S.2: You are responsible for it… And still this is my personal opinion how to handle flash movies for users:Best way how to handle flash content in business areas and yes.. Iam a bad Admin.

Tip: Workaround for NumLock issues in Citrix Session with the IGEL Linux

Monday, November 24th, 2014

H Folks,

maybe you run into an issue that the NumLock Key is partial not working in a ICA Session if you’re using the Citrix Receiver for Linux.

To fix create a new profile  or open the local setup at the IGEL and browse to System->Firmware Customizations->Custom Commands->Desktop Commands and add the following line to the Custom Command Desktop Final Area:

xmodmap -e 'remove mod2 = Num_Lock'

Close the setup and apply the configurations or assign the profile to the affected devices.

After a reboot the issue should be gone but please note, the NumLock key will be not available for local Applications if used. This is only a temporary work around until this behavior is fixed with newer Citrix Receiver Versions.

Cheers

Tip: Windows 8.x VM doesn’t start on VMWare Workstation 10

Sunday, November 23rd, 2014

Hello Folks,

if you have installed the latest Microsoft Security Hotfix KB2995388 to a Windows 8 VM running on VMWare Workstation 10 you might run into the issue that the VM doesn’t start anymore.

To fix this open the file c:\ProgramData\VMWare\VMWare Workstation\config.ini and add the line vmmon.disableHostParameters=”TRUE”

Restart the VMwareHostD service and than start the VM again, it should work now…

Have fun!

Info: Will Microsoft’s licensing change boost VDI installations?

Thursday, November 6th, 2014

Hi Folks,

some important change has been done by Microsoft to the volume Licensing, this can boost the VDI business in the future…

What was done exactly:

peruserlic

What does it mean? Microsoft changes the Licensing for Desktop OS’s from per Device to Per Device and Per User for Enterprise customers and allows also a installation at the same time on any device incl. Tablets. This can be a big driver for Enterprises to roll out or validate Desktop VDI Installation in the upcoming months now, it makes VDI licening much more simpler and flexible for Enterprise customers. It also includes Windows 8.1 Pro and Enterprise incl. Windows 7 and 8, so it’s not only limited to devices running Windows 8.1 Enterprise and this point could be important too.

For VDI also important is the Remote Access Right and here the Per User option comes with “Any device” access, the device licensing only offer support for “noncorporate” devices. Means the User licensing supports now also corporate owned Linux based Thin Clients or IOS/Android based devices.

One big step in the right direction from Microsoft, really nice! You can also read the full article here: VL Licensing Windows 8.1

Cheers
