Regarding the new IGEL Linux V5 i can’t tell much at the moment, the screen above is a fake (i just want that it looks nice… 🙂 ..but the device picture is real. ) but the final result will look like that. As soon there is a IGEL Linux V5 available i will write more about it but currently IGEL do not share any RC’s or preview Versions. 🙁

You should be aware that a few things will change in the upcoming months, like the Productnames (see above) but don’t panic… It’s still a IGEL Linux. Regarding Windows 7 is not much to say, still a IGEL optimized Microsoft Windows Embedded but i will send also an update regarding this once it is available.

Regarding the specs, the device looks nice on the first view and could be a very nice solution depending on the use case. If you’re looking out for a cool (large display) all in one device you should try to get a trial device after the product lunch…

Cheers

Michael

P.S.: Of course i will rework the cloud-client.info hardware whitepaper after the final release.

Using IGEL Linux based Thin Clients with VMWare Horizon View 5.2

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Hello Folks,

today i’ve tested the IGEL Linux together with VMWare’s Horizon View 5.2.

One new Feature coming with Horizon View 5.2 is the Horizon View HTML Access based connection (aka VMWare Blast).
To use this feature you need to install an add-on component to your View Connection Server and also an extra Agent to the VM. In my Demo Setup i’ve used a Windows 8 based Desktop running on a VMWare Server to have PCOIP (thru Software) available, i’ve also installed the VMWare Tools, VMWare View Agent and the new Horizon View 5.2 Remote Experience Agent (HTML/VMWare Blast). For my tests i’ve used a trial license but it should not make any difference regarding the results.

On my Client Side i got a nice Message that the Firefox Version coming with my IGEL Firmware 4.11.100 is not supported for HTML Access. I ignored this message 🙂 and the result looks like  this…

fusion1

So it worked fine with the current IGEL Linux Version 4.11.100 but do not aspect a high multimedia performance at all, this is not related to the IGEL Linux! I’ve tested it also with my I7 Laptop and also here the results for multimedia content are not the best too, this is a similar result like for Web based Clients from other vendors.

For my next test i’ve used the native VMWare Client coming with the 4.11.100 Firmware, this is the Version 1.6.0 but Horizon View 5.2 comes with a new client version 1.7.0. I’ve not noticed any disadvantage related to this but it could be that some new features are not working or maybe some issues are fixed with the 1.7 Version from VMWare. I hope that IGEL has included the new 1.7.0 Client in the upcoming 4.12.100 Firmwares.

fusion3

After i’ve configured the IGEL Client thru the local setup i was able to start a connection without any issues, also i was able to connect thru PCOIP to my Windows 8 based virtual Horizon View 5.2 desktop.

fusion2

The multimedia results are looking much better compared to the VMWare Blast (HTML Access) connection but this was what i assumed when starting the test. I was also able to connect my USB devices to the VM and for me it worked without any issue; of course i did not test it 24/7 or all possible device types.

In general it looks that VMWare Horizon View 5.2 works good together with the IGEL Linux based Thin Clients, maybe the results will be better with the new Client 1.7.0 but here IGEL has to deliver it thru a Firmware update.

Cheers
Michael

Update: I got the confirmation that the upcoming 4.12.100 will also contain the new VMWare Client for Horizon View. The firmware should be available in the upcoming weeks.

First Pictures new UD3 Dual Core device

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Hello Folks,

during a product presentation i got the change to take some Pictures of the new UD3 Dual Core device that was also shown at the CeBit a week ago.

IMAG0176 IMAG0175

The case comes with the same form factor like the current UD3, regarding the performance the UD3 Dual Core seams to provide a little bit more power like the current UD5. The serial port/rs232 port is gone to provide a second DVI Port for dual Monitoring and this allows to connect two digital display to the client without the need of a Y-cable, users requiring a serial port can get this with a add-on connection foot for the client.

Also IGEL has shown a beta firmware of the upcoming 4.12.100 Linux firmware, the firmware looks to support RDP8 (Windows Server 2012 / Windows 8) incl. RemoteFX which is very  unique in the Linux Thin Client world (RDP7 incl. RemoteFX is already supported by the current IGEL LX/OS Firmwares).

At all the device looks very good on the first view, iam still waiting to get a sample for some more tests in my hands incl. the upcoming UD5 dual core. I have only one point to consider, the USB, Network and the PS/2 ports on the back are very close together incl. the two USB 3.0 Ports, this might be hard to handle for users if they want to connect a USB Harddisk or Memory supporting USB 3.0. For example to connect a USB WiFi Device (without extension foot) i was required to use a short USB extension cable because the WiFi device (a big one) did block the other ports also a regular USB Memory (not a ‘very’ small one) did block ports around without the use of an extension cable. But this point is currently the only thing that bother me a little bit and are related to the small form factor.

Cheers
Michael

P.S.: Sorry for the cables around… It was a tech preview…. 😉

Upcoming IGEL Dual Core devices…

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

Hi Folks,

if you visit the IGEL Website you maybe noticed the CeBit disclaimer/Ad, in this Ad IGEL announces the presentation for upcoming Dual Core devices (UD3 and UD5). Currently no Information about the exact release date is mentioned here but it should be during 2013. Also it looks that these devices will not directly replace the UD3 or UD5, so these devices would be seperate devices like “UD3 Dual Core” or similar.

Cheers
Michael

P.S.: IGEL also announced the Windows Embedded 8 Standard Client for the CeBit presentation too… But without an exact release date.

IGEL announces RDP 8 support for Windows ES 7 (Windows 7 based) devices for end of February

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

Hi Folks,

IGEL announced RDP 8 support for Windows ES 7 based devices, read also here: https://www.igel.com/company/press-media/press-releases/single-view/article/igels-latest-firmware-update-integrates-microsoft-rdp-80-with-new-remotefx-features-for-a-better.html

Cheers
Michael

P.S.: I’ve got already some request regarding RDP8 for Linux, it will follow for sure but needs some more development from IGEL incl. certification thru Microsoft and can not be compared with incl. “just” the RDP8 Client from Microsoft for Windows 7 based Systems. So don’t panic, iam quite sure it will follow!

One year blog.cloud-client.info and some changes coming up….

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Hello Folks,

in a few days this blog will celebrate the 1st year anniversary and it’s time for a few changes and also a small look back.

In the first year we got now more then 110.000 Visitors (unique visits) and i want to thank you for your interest and also the nice feedback provided by users. Now a small view in the future:

1) As add-on to this blog a new english forum is available, you can use this to ask specific questions and also to provide help, suggestions and solutions to other users. The use is free of charge in general! The URL is http://forum.cloud-client.info , it’s currently in beta state and the final look and feel incl. the forum topics might change in the upcoming weeks. You can find a link to the forum also in the right menu.

2) I will add some discret advertising to this page, cloud-client.info has no sponsors and to keep it intependent incl. funding a new project which i have in mind + server upgrades: This step needs to be done…

Thank you and i hope that this blog will be helpful for you in the future!
Cheers
Michael
